Gillian Bates

While in Chicago at Renegade Handmade as part of my book tour for Embroidered Effects, I got to see the work of many artists included in their current exhibit: The In Stitches Showcase (not to be confused with the current In Stitches exhibition in NYC). I was particularly fascinated with the work of UK-based artist Gillian Bates. She machine-stitches complex compositions over carefully appliquéd segments of pale fabrics giving her work a sharp, illustratorly-look with a soft wash of color. But it's all cotton and thread.

Jann Haworth - Exhibit in UK

Jann Haworth is more of a "soft-sculpture" artist than an embroidery artist but let's make sure you know about her current show going on in England:

Hollywood-born artist Jann Haworth (b. 1942) is among the few women associated with the Pop Art movement of the 1960s. Her sewn cloth soft sculptures refer to typically American Pop themes such as fast food, film stars, cheerleaders, cowboys and comics, as well as to her experiences of living in England during a period of cultural transformation. Developed in partnership with the artist, this exhibition is the first UK solo show of Haworth’s work in a public gallery since 1972.

Domestic Animals - Group Show

Tonight is the opening of "Domestic Animals" at Webb Gallery, a group show curated by Heyd Fontenot. I have three works in ink and colored pencil on Bristol. You can see all three pieces on my flickr set. I wish I could be there for the opening tonight, but I am in Chicago on book tour.

Adam-Parker Smith & Thread Baring: A Portrayal of Masculinity One Stitch at a Time at UW Milwaukee Union Art Gallery

I just found out (by peeking at their blog) that there is a show called "Thread Baring" opening November 19th at the Milwaukee Union Art gallery, with a specific focus on works by men:

This group exhibition looks at masculinity as represented by male artists working in forms and mediums often considered to be the domain of women. Using materials like thread, yarn and felt in practices like weaving, knitting and embroidery , these visually compelling two and three-dimensional works aim to challenge preconceptions about the subject and forms of men’s art. With a literal construction of masculinity, these fiber artists present contrasts meant to perplex and intrigue.

Artists include : Youn Woo Chaa, Robert Conger, Angelo Filomeno, Craig Fisher, Kent Henrickson, Mark Newport, Chris Niver, Adam Parker Smith, Paul Villinski, Michael Brennand- Wood, and Rob Wynn.

Domestic Animals -show coming

I was invited by friend and extraordinary painter, Heyd Fontenot, to be part of a group show at Webb Gallery in Waxahachie, Texas, called "Domestic Animals" (theme open to interpretation). I'm using this as an opportunity to do some pieces I've had banging around in my head for a while. Here's a sketch. I'll post the finished works closer to the opening, which is November 21st.

Over & Under Tonight

Tonight is the opening of Over & Under, a show of stitches that I was invited to curate for Yard Dog Gallery here in Austin. I'm really, really excited to have all this wonderful work in one place like this, for the first time in Austin. I want to thank all the artists who enthusiastically participated and made it all possible.

Over and Under: A Show of Stitches
@ Yard Dog Gallery
1510 S. Congress Ave Austin, TX 78704

opening: Friday Nov 6th from 7-9pm

(show will run until Dec 6th)

If you're in Austin, please come by and check out one of the best and most fascinating galleries in Texas! Randy (that's him) was the first gallery owner to hold a solo show of my work in embroidery several years ago, and for that, I am forever grateful.

I will be there with bells on, and I hope to see you there!

Jazmín Berakha

From Buenos Aires, the embroidered works of Jazmín Berakha are whimsical, simple and lovely. I have been enjoying the near-daily emails artists are sending me of their work. It's fascinating how many artists are using embroidery in their art.

Embroidered Signature

I was at Yard Dog gallery all day today hanging the Over and Under show, and it was such a treat to open the carefully packed boxes, and unwrap the work of artists I have blogged about here but not seen in person. And, there were many surprises: some work was much larger than I had expected (Dana Carlson) and some was much tinier than I realized (Emily Eibel). But, my favorite surprise was discovering the wonderful embroidered title and signatures on the back of Michael Aaron McAllister's work (above). It's a shame to have it hidden against the wall, so I snapped a photo for you before it was hung and hidden.

Over and Under opens this Friday, November 6th at Yard Dog 7-9pm

Maurizio Anzeri

Shannon Rankin just sent me an email asking if I had ever seen the work of Maurizio Anzeri. Why, no! I had not. And now, I am so glad that I have.
