Peter Crawley

Looking at a collected list of "minimalist websites", Peter Crawley's was at the top. I had not seen his work before. Worked almost exclusively in black thread on paper, the precision and line work that could be mistaken for pen and ink is sweetly betrayed by the soft burs and errant fibers. The architectural studies are my favorite.

Unraveling Tradition - Group Show

embroidery by Valerie Roybal

Valerie Roybal sent me a very kind note with these lovely examples of her embroidery and an invitation to the group exhibit "Unraveling Tradition" currently on display at 516 Arts in Albuquerque, New Mexico. From their website:
Unraveling Tradition focuses primarily on sculpture and installations, featuring the work of artists who use fabric, yarn, thread and various fiber media to create nontraditional objects and assemblages. They convey contemporary ideas and concerns, using traditional handwork techniques such as weaving, sewing, embroidery, felting, knitting and crochet. Artists from across the country include Mandy Greer, Miya Hannan, Sarah Hewitt, Lisa Kellner, Beili Liu, Tristin Lowe, Yelizaveta Nersesova, Ellen Rothenberg, Valerie Roybal, Alyce Santoro, Loren Schwerd and Jerilea Zempel. This exhibition is curated by 516 ARTS, and is in conjunction with Convergence: Albuquerque 2010 the International Fiber Arts Conference (July 18-24, 2010).
