Gillian Bates

While in Chicago at Renegade Handmade as part of my book tour for Embroidered Effects, I got to see the work of many artists included in their current exhibit: The In Stitches Showcase (not to be confused with the current In Stitches exhibition in NYC). I was particularly fascinated with the work of UK-based artist Gillian Bates. She machine-stitches complex compositions over carefully appliqu├ęd segments of pale fabrics giving her work a sharp, illustratorly-look with a soft wash of color. But it's all cotton and thread.
