Mary Woodring's Barking Dog

My good friend and fellow stitcher, Mary Woodring, sent me an email the other day with what she's been working on. I asked her if I could share it with my readers. Here's what she said about the piece:

It's an homage to my neighbor's dog, the barkinest dog in creation. The title was suggested by my sister Nora, who lives in the basement apartment downstairs in the same house as the dog: "Ní beithíoch ionnraicthe é," which means "It is not a natural animal, it is a monster." It is 7 3/4" x 9 1/2", white glow-in-the-dark thread on black muslin. And that's not just a random bunch of stars! Jim suggested I do Canis Major.

Unraveling Tradition - Group Show

Valerie Roybal sent me a very kind note with these lovely examples of her embroidery and an invitation to the group exhibit "Unraveling Tradition" currently on display at 516 Arts in Albuquerque, New Mexico. From their website:

Unraveling Tradition focuses primarily on sculpture and installations, featuring the work of artists who use fabric, yarn, thread and various fiber media to create nontraditional objects and assemblages. They convey contemporary ideas and concerns, using traditional handwork techniques such as weaving, sewing, embroidery, felting, knitting and crochet. Artists from across the country include Mandy Greer, Miya Hannan, Sarah Hewitt, Lisa Kellner, Beili Liu, Tristin Lowe, Yelizaveta Nersesova, Ellen Rothenberg, Valerie Roybal, Alyce Santoro, Loren Schwerd and Jerilea Zempel. This exhibition is curated by 516 ARTS, and is in conjunction with Convergence: Albuquerque 2010 the International Fiber Arts Conference (July 18-24, 2010).

Over & Under - Nominated Best of Austin

Over & Under, the group show of contemporary embroidery that I curated for Yard Dog Gallery last winter, has been nominated as a "Best of Austin" by the Austin Critic's Table! Replanting the Garden curated by Richard Saja - Group Show

Tonight is the opening for Richard Saja's invitational group show called "Replanting the Garden", works based on Hieronymous Bosch's famous painting (I uh, though we could reference any of Bosch's work, so, er...oops). May 7, 6-11 p.m. as part of IDADA's First Friday Gallery Tour.

Although painted over 500 years ago, Hieronymus Bosch's triptych THE GARDEN of EARTHLY DELIGHTS has lost none of its allure, beauty or ambiguity. Theories attempting to illuminate its hermetic iconography abound yet noone seems to have been able to definitively pin down what exactly the artist is attempting to do in the painting or why. Is it a visual representation of the alchemical process? a cautionary depiction of the dangers of the flesh or just the opposite: a voyeuristic revel extolling the pleasures (and consequent dangers) of free love? Regardless of original intention, the painting functions as a mirror of the viewer: we take away from it what we wish to see and it becomes many things to many people.

With this in mind, REPLANTING the GARDEN brings together the works of over 40 artists and craftsmen from all over the country who were simply given the directive to create a piece in direct response to Bosch's greatest work. The show is curated by New York-based artist Richard Saja.

Also Friday night musical performances by winners and others from the recent Thrift Store Music competition including Tonos Triad, Sonic Assault Duo and more. And a new electronic set from Marck Ferrari.

Lost at Sea at Gallery Hanahou NYC - Group Show

Tonight is the opening of "Lost at Sea", an invitational group show at Gallery Hanahou in NYC. I'll have three small works included. This show was planned last year, and now seems especially poignant considering the disastrous situation occurring in the Gulf. From the Gallerly Hanahou website:

32 exciting artists who share underwater visions of items lost, creatures forgotten, and life that struggles to stay with us.

Curated by Kristen Rask of Schmancy and "Plush You," "Lost at Sea" will feature a broad array of amusing and uncanny works in embroidery, plush, and other materials, including new pieces by Hine Mizushima, Jill Bliss, and Jenny Hart of Sublime Stitching.

Work Space & Art Work

I'm participating in an art show at Domy Books, Austin tonight: photos of artists' work spaces and brief talks about our day jobs and getting by as independent artists. For me, that would be with my company, Sublime Stitching. I will be giving a brief talk after 8pm and photos of my various, hectic workspaces will be included in the show.

Curator Ele Carpenter's Open Source Embroidery exhibit is currently on display at the Museum of Craft and Folk Art in San Francisco. It closes soon (I'm so behind in my blogging!), and this is a show not to miss. I really, really regret that I missed it while I was in San Francisco for my book tour.

Sur le Fil - Sete, France

Sur le Fil opened the second, and larger, leg of its tour last night in Sete, France. I have several works on display in the "labyrinth" (black fabric walls that the works are pinned to) including Pink Forest. If I could have turned right back around to attend the opening, I would have.

While in Chicago at Renegade Handmade as part of my book tour for Embroidered Effects, I got to see the work of many artists included in their current exhibit: The In Stitches Showcase (not to be confused with the current In Stitches exhibition in NYC). I was particularly fascinated with the work of UK-based artist Gillian Bates. She machine-stitches complex compositions over carefully appliquéd segments of pale fabrics giving her work a sharp, illustratorly-look with a soft wash of color. But it's all cotton and thread.

Tonight is the opening of "Domestic Animals" at Webb Gallery, a group show curated by Heyd Fontenot. I have three works in ink and colored pencil on Bristol. You can see all three pieces on my flickr set. I wish I could be there for the opening tonight, but I am in Chicago on book tour.

Adam-Parker Smith & Thread Baring: A Portrayal of Masculinity One Stitch at a Time at UW Milwaukee Union Art Gallery

I just found out (by peeking at their blog) that there is a show called "Thread Baring" opening November 19th at the Milwaukee Union Art gallery, with a specific focus on works by men:

This group exhibition looks at masculinity as represented by male artists working in forms and mediums often considered to be the domain of women. Using materials like thread, yarn and felt in practices like weaving, knitting and embroidery , these visually compelling two and three-dimensional works aim to challenge preconceptions about the subject and forms of men’s art. With a literal construction of masculinity, these fiber artists present contrasts meant to perplex and intrigue.

Artists include : Youn Woo Chaa, Robert Conger, Angelo Filomeno, Craig Fisher, Kent Henrickson, Mark Newport, Chris Niver, Adam Parker Smith, Paul Villinski, Michael Brennand- Wood, and Rob Wynn.

Domestic Animals -show coming

I was invited by friend and extraordinary painter, Heyd Fontenot, to be part of a group show at Webb Gallery in Waxahachie, Texas, called "Domestic Animals" (theme open to interpretation). I'm using this as an opportunity to do some pieces I've had banging around in my head for a while. Here's a sketch. I'll post the finished works closer to the opening, which is November 21st.
