This piece will be exhibited at Okay Mountain this weekend as part of a silent auction to benefit the gallery. If you're in Austin, please come support the mountain this Saturday, June 28th. Bidding on artwork begins at 5:30pm and the party goes on. And on.
Sometimes my work is impossible to photograph, like this one- burgundy stitched on burgundy. The entire work is about 60" long on very gauzy satin. There's an alternate, back-lit view on flickr.

Hair Embroidery

Embroidering with hair fascinates me. I worked "Oh Unicorn" with a single strand of hair on leather, and it took me two weeks to complete (with much breaking, re-starting and trial and error). Embroidering with hair is a Chinese tradition that dates back many centuries, and is still in practice. Doing a search for hair embroidery turned up the work of two other artists: Laura Normandin and Kate Kretz.

WIP
This week finally allowed me some time to get back to this work-in-progress that I began in April. Here's what's been emerging after around twelve hours of work. I can embroider for an hour at a time, take a break and then do another hour. I typically embroider 1-2 hours each day. When I first started, I spent 3-4 hours embroidering every day from 2000-2005 (then the demands of Sublime Stitching prevented that). But now, I'm back to embroidering nearly every evening. Click the image to enlarge.
I'll be posting more complete images in sequence from this work (and others) on my Flickr account as I work on them. You can also view the entries here labeled under "wip" (but more detailed steps will go on Flickr). If you'd like access to images on my Flickr account that show my process more closely, send me a flickrmail requesting I make you a friend.

Needles and Pens - SF Group Show

Drat it all. I am so swamped with work for Sublime Stitching right now (new patterns, new website, new book) and my recent trip to ICE Atlanta, that I forgot to blog here about some art events I'm involved with. Needles and Pens celebrated their 5th anniversary with a giant group show and party. La Llorona is on display for those in San Francisco. I really wish I could have been there. Follow this link for pictures of the party, the art, the performers...

Christopher Niver

I love the specific, natural spaces Christopher Niver's needleworks take on as subjects. My favorites are like this one: natural crevices with water and stylized clouds passing by. Christopher's and I both have work in the Devotion to Thread show now hanging in Milwaukee.
