Jim Woodring Collaboration

It has been nearly impossible for me to find the time to do any of my embroidery artwork. I have numerous unfinished pieces lingering around. The demands of Sublime Stitching have been huge this past year. But I'm so inspired and ready to return to works like this, my collaboration with Jim Woodring (who's newest book, Weathercraft, just came out).

Lou Reed - wip

Even though I say I'm on vacation, I'm still working like crazy. Here is the ongoing progress of the Lou Reed Portrait for next month's exhibit in Paris. You can see the preparatory sketch here.

WIP - Woodring Update

Amazingly, I found a little corner of time last night to sit down and slowly continue progress on my Jim Woodring collab.

WIP - St. John the Baptist

This is what I've been working on for the upcoming Biblical Proportions show since early February. This is about 20 hours of work and I have been posting start-to-finish progress photos on Flickr. Jordan Lee (Sublime Stitching's Shipping Manager and resident musician) was my just-what-I-needed-and-willing model:

WIP

Slowly but surely, more work has been done on this piece, that I've been stitching on since April of '08. You can see it at various stages here (scroll down) and here.

WIP

This week finally allowed me some time to get back to this work-in-progress that I began in April. Here's what's been emerging after around twelve hours of work. I can embroider for an hour at a time, take a break and then do another hour. I typically embroider 1-2 hours each day. When I first started, I spent 3-4 hours embroidering every day from 2000-2005 (then the demands of Sublime Stitching prevented that). But now, I'm back to embroidering nearly every evening. Click the image to enlarge.

I'll be posting more complete images in sequence from this work (and others) on my Flickr account as I work on them. You can also view the entries here labeled under "wip" (but more detailed steps will go on Flickr). If you'd like access to images on my Flickr account that show my process more closely, send me a flickrmail requesting I make you a friend.

WIP

The embroidery has started on the preliminary comp I posted earlier, and here's an update. This is entirely re-worked embroidery based on the earlier, partly-embroidered sketch. I usually am working on three pieces in rotation at any given time. Eight hours of stitching and sewing sequins at this point.

Stitching + Pencil + Photoshop

This is a partially worked embroidery with photoshop manipulation and a pencil sketch. I was working on a final template to embroider and I like this stage of it. You can click the image for a closer view.
